Working approach
Break the notice into transaction, period, provision, evidence and quantified exposure.
Test returns, ledgers, invoices, e-way bills and portal data before adopting a factual position.
Present the statutory position and supporting record in a form that remains usable through appeal.
Prepare for the first review
An organised record helps identify the issue and prepare a complete, focused response.
Common questions
Keep the complete communication and its annexures, record the response date and identify the period and allegation. Gather the underlying records before answering. A notice, summons, assessment order and recovery communication require different responses; the document itself should determine the next step.
A reconciliation is a starting point. It should explain each difference and link it to invoices, returns, credit notes, payments or other evidence. The legal treatment and the relevant tax period must also be reviewed before accepting a demand or disputing it.
The review starts with the actual supply, contract, period, receipts and applicable rate and credit conditions. Builders should assemble project and completion or occupancy records; hotels should separate accommodation, restaurant and other revenue streams. A rate or ITC conclusion should not be assumed from the business label alone.
Bring the complete order, evidence of service, earlier submissions, demand computation and payment details. These records help assess the issues, available remedy, limitation and any pre-deposit requirement. The consultation can then focus on a documented position and the action needed next.
